Celebrating the Cape Town Carnival

The much-loved Cape Town Carnival, which took place on 16 March, brings people from across the country together to celebrate the beauty and heritage of South Africa’s Mother City. MultiChoice Group, which recently listed on the JSE Limited, has supported the Carnival as a lead sponsor for the fifth time.

As Africa’s most-loved storyteller, MultiChoice knows the value of local stories particularly when they reflect and enrich people’s lives in the way that the Cape Town Carnival does year after year. While the Carnival fills the air with music and laughter, there are also many people and small businesses who benefit and are uplifted because they are given the opportunity to work at the event or to showcase their talent.

“Through its investments in infrastructure, technology and empowerment initiatives, MultiChoice empowers a supply chain which in turn supports local business and communities,” says Joe Heshu, MultiChoice Corporate Affairs Executive. “It’s an incredibly proud moment to see the Cape Town Carnival provide a platform for so many initiatives.”

Commenting on the benefits of the carnival, Michelle Davids, Group Leader at Michelle Davids Dance group adds, “I established my own dance group after gaining experience through my participation in the carnival. I provide an opportunity for to showcase their talents at the carnival. One of my greatest pleasures is to share in the excitement of my colleagues while performing at the carnival. This is a unique opportunity for who have never participated in the carnival to join my group and showcase their talents to thousands of spectators.” 

In 2018, the Cape Town Carnival had an economic impact of R58,85 million with a direct spend of R20,27 million on the evening of the event. Job creation is a key priority of the Cape Town Carnival and created 1 399 jobs. Jobs were created in diverse fields and with diverse skill sets and 607 jobs were created for women across all disciplines.
