Record attendance ushers in the return of DStv Diski Challenge.

News: South Africa

Over 18 000 (over two days) descended upon the Tsakane Stadium to welcome the resumption of the 2023/24 DStv Diski Challenge season

Record attendance ushers in the return of DStv Diski Challenge.

The season got underway this past weekend after almost a two-month recess, a customary break which allows the players to concentrate on their end-of-year examinations.

As the new generation would say “iweekend ibi lit” (the weekend was exciting, fun, or energetic), there was no shortage of fun over the two days on and off the pitch.

On the pitch, the football was action-packed, fast-paced, dramatic, and full of goals.

The youngsters who graced the field representing their respective clubs did not disappoint as the fans also admitted that there was no boring match over the two days. Players such as Mohau Nkota, Jabu Mokone (Orlando Pirates), Neo Bohloko (Kaizer Chiefs), Siyabonga Mabena, Keabetswe Ramotsei (Mamelodi Sundowns), Daanyal Daya (TS Galaxy) and Langelihle Phili (Stellenbosch FC) were among the top performers on the day.

Daya, Nkota, and Bohloko who hold record of the youngest player to score a goal in the Diski Challenge scored two goals each player in their respective matches. And all these players have shown consistency since the beginning of the season. Without any doubts they are destined for greatness as they are on the verge of following the likes of Relebohile Mofokeng formerly known as Ratomo, Shandre Campbell, and Ime Okon, who were playing in the Diski last season and are now regulars at the senior team level.

The impressive attendance figures can be attributed to the Diski Challenge’s Back-to-School campaign which rewards fans with school uniform vouchers and stationary hampers.

The campaign, which is running for five weeks, sees five families (a parent and a child between the age of 9-12) taking part in a fun football obstacle during the half time break of all matches. The winning family is rewarded with a cool R1500 school uniform voucher. The rest of the participants receive a bag full of stationary essentials for their efforts.

Over the next four weekends, the Diski Challenge will make stops in the townships of Clermont in Durban twice, Soshanguve in Pretoria and Idasvallei in Stellenbosch bringing with it South African football’s next stars and the chance for fans to win cool prizes for the return of the school year.

Matches from all four weekends will be broadcast live on SuperSport Variety 4 and PSL.
