About
MultiChoice
Nigeria

At MultiChoice Nigeria, enriching lives within the communities we serve remains central to how we do business. We recognise that the long-term sustainability of our organisation is inseparable from the advancement of these communities.

We create socio-economic value through our everyday operations and sustained investments in social impact initiatives spanning education, skills development, sports, and critical local infrastructure. These efforts are designed not only to drive inclusive growth, but to strengthen the ecosystems that support our industry and the wider economy.

Our socio-economic investments have contributed meaningfully to Nigeria’s economic development – supporting entrepreneurship, enabling job creation, and expanding opportunities across our channel distribution and partner platforms. Through targeted infrastructure investments, we continue to play a role in enabling growth across multiple sectors of the economy.

We remain deeply committed to the growth and global competitiveness of our creative industry. By commissioning compelling local stories and providing a continent-wide digital platform for Nigerian talent, we are helping to amplify authentic voices and expand the reach of our creative industry.

Our continued investment in local content directly empowers indigenous filmmakers and adjacent creative sectors, unlocking new income streams and reinforcing the value chain that sustains the industry.

Ultimately, MultiChoice Nigeria is driven by a clear purpose: to make a positive, lasting impact while minimising negative effects on the communities in which we operate. Anything less would be inconsistent with our mission of truly enriching lives.

From the outset, our ambition has been clear: to deliver high-quality entertainment that brings value into Nigerian homes through our DStv and GOtv platforms. Over the years, this ambition has evolved into a broader commitment – one that recognises that our long-term success is inseparable from the strength, well-being, and progress of the communities we serve.
Through our operations, we make meaningful socio-economic contributions to the Nigerian economy – stimulating entrepreneurship, enabling employment, and supporting livelihoods across our distribution and content ecosystems. Our continued investment in infrastructure and local capability reflects our belief in the power of sustained partnerships to unlock growth across multiple sectors.
At MultiChoice Nigeria, we remain deliberate about creating positive impact while actively minimising any negative effects of our operations. This is not incidental to our work; it is fundamental to it. To operate otherwise would be to fall short of our purpose – and of our responsibility – to truly enrich lives.

How we create social value

The MultiChoice brand has contributed immensely to the growth of Nigerian creative industry through M-Net and Africa Magic, where it has commissioned series, reality shows, entertainment programmes and films in local languages. From one channel in 2003, Africa Magic has expanded to six channels, fuelling an insatiable demand for more top-quality programming premium content such as Nigerian Idol, Big Brother Naija and the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) , all of which have captivated millions of viewers across the continent. One of the most popular Africa Magic series, Tinsel, which now in its 17th season has clocked more than 4000 episodes while employing 1200 staff and crew.

Growing Nigeria’s creative industries

The MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF): Through the MTF, we are developing and training young people who are passionate about film. With this social investment, we are promoting the growth of local content in key markets. Delivered through 3 touchpoints, the MTF Academy, the MTF MasterClass Series and the MTF Portal, we are impacting the lives of over 15,000 film makers, elevating the quality of storytelling and shaping Nigeria’s image positively.

In December 2023, we successfully graduated the fourth set of 20 students from the West African academy based in Lagos. Our alumni are now gainfully employed in the industry, having set-up production companies while in the academy. Through the alumni production companies, our local content pipeline is growing.

M-Net and Africa Magic: Through M-Net and Africa Magic, we commission series, reality shows, light entertainment programmes and films in the Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo and English languages creating 177,459 hours of original local content, pumping economic value of N32.6 billion directly into the creative industry and providing 9,955 jobs in adjacent industries. From one channel in 2003, Africa Magic has expanded to eight channels, fuelling an insatiable demand for more top-quality programming premium content such as The Voice Nigeria, Big Brother Naija and the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), all of which have captivated millions of viewers across the continent. One of the most popular Africa Magic series, Tinsel, has clocked more than 2000 episodes while employing 1200 staff and crew.

Investing in local sports

MultiChoice Nigeria has also invested significantly in supporting local sport through initiatives, such as the quarterly GOtv Boxing Night event, aimed at reviving boxing in Nigeria with better organization and funding leading to better remuneration for boxers and greater engagement of people involved in boxing-related economic activities.

MCN has also taken on sponsorship and broadcasting of the Nigerian Professional Football League and DStv Basketball League (the FIBA Nigeria Basketball Federation) which promoted players, administrators, clubs, leagues and perhaps most importantly, youth development.

Enriching Nigerian Lives - Multichoice Talent Factory

In 2018 the company established the MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) as its main CSI vehicle. MTF is a shared-value initiative that provides a platform for the creative industries to develop their talent and engage with one another through their shared passions. This initiative has a multi-tiered approach, namely; the MTF Portal, the MTF Academies and MTF Industry Masterclasses. The MTF Academy is a fully funded training program aimed at developing emerging TV and film talent in Africa, through an accredited 12-month immersion curriculum which includes both theory and hands-on experience in cinematography, editing, audio production and storytelling. It is the first academy of its kind, spanning three regions and 13 countries across Africa.
